Organic production has become an inevitable trend in world agriculture. Not standing aside, Vietnam's agricultural industry has gradually promoted the development of organic agriculture, considering this a long-term, sustainable direction.

In order to implement the activities of the Sectoral Strategic Cooperation Program on Food Safety in the Value Chain (SSC) between Vietnam and Denmark, the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) coordinated with the Danish Embassy in Vietnam to organize a Workshop on "Organic Agriculture Development in Vietnam" in Hanoi, on the morning of November 15, 2024.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Pham Van Duy, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development, said: Organic production has become an inevitable trend of world agriculture. Not standing aside, Vietnam's agricultural industry has gradually promoted the development of organic agriculture, considering this a sustainable direction that contributes to solving remaining problems such as quality standards, production processes... moving forward to bring our country's agricultural products to dominate large, potential markets.

In that context, many mechanisms and policies to facilitate the development of green agriculture have been issued, such as: Resolution No. 19-NQ/TW/2022 on agriculture, farmers, and rural areas to 2030, vision to 2045 clearly states "encourage the development of green, organic, circular agriculture".

Previously, in 2018, the Government issued Decree No. 109/2018/ND-CP on organic agriculture and in 2020, Decision No. 885/QD-TTg approved the Organic Agriculture Development Project for the period 2020-2030.

Through the above specific policies, it will help Vietnamese farmers gradually approach organic agriculture, quickly transform fields, farming, animal husbandry and aquaculture to meet organic agriculture standards and regulations according to the trends of Vietnam and the world.

Organic production has become an inevitable trend in world agriculture. Not standing aside, Vietnam's agricultural industry has gradually promoted the development of organic agriculture, considering this a long-term, sustainable direction.

By the end of 2023, the whole country currently has 74,540 hectares of organic agricultural production, accounting for 0.5% of Vietnam's total agricultural production area - Illustration.

Through the above specific policies, it will help Vietnamese farmers gradually approach organic agriculture, quickly transform fields, farming, animal husbandry and aquaculture to meet organic agriculture standards and regulations according to the trends of Vietnam and the world.

In the past few years, Vietnam's organic agriculture has undergone a strong transformation and achieved significant achievements in productivity and output. Products are increasingly diverse and production scale is also increasing, creating a large volume of products available in large domestic supermarkets and for export.

Among them, we must mention the fields of farming, animal husbandry, aquaculture... according to organic standards. The whole country has thousands of production and processing establishments converting to organic agriculture to help farmers escape poverty and get rich legitimately on their homeland.

Although Vietnam's organic agricultural production area is small, there are still many effective production models, helping to raise the level of Vietnamese agricultural products. By the end of 2023, the country currently has 74,540 hectares of organic agricultural production, accounting for 0.5% of Vietnam's total agricultural production area.

Organic agricultural production not only brings higher economic efficiency but also helps farmers improve their knowledge and skills, change traditional thinking, methods and thinking to safety and responsibility, meeting the increasing needs of consumers.

The value of organic agricultural products is also superior to conventional selling prices. For example, for cinnamon, anise, cashew kernels, pepper or coconut meat, the selling price of organic products that meet EU Organic and USDA Organic certification standards is 10% to 25% higher, even higher than conventional products of the same type.

Not only that, the demand for organic products in many markets, such as Europe and the United States, is increasing. Due to changing eating habits, consumers tend to eat clean products of natural origin, foods derived from plants to replace meat and conventionally produced products.

Speaking at the Conference, Ms. Sanne Høj Andrén, Counselor for Agriculture and Food, Embassy of Denmark said: The Sectoral Strategic Cooperation (SSC) Program between Vietnam and Denmark has successfully closed Phase II, marking a great step forward in improving food and animal feed safety, while improving the value chain. As we officially launch Phase III, we will further our efforts to encourage sustainable agricultural practices, promote green transformation, and maintain our commitment to improving food safety while reducing food loss and waste in Vietnam.

Recently, Vietnam and Denmark have cooperated closely through the SSC program to solve important challenges in the food and feed industry. As a result, the two sides have strengthened legal frameworks, enhanced expertise and facilitated the exchange of valuable knowledge, laying a solid foundation for more sustainable agricultural practices. When entering Phase III, the cooperation in the SSC program continues to demonstrate the two countries' common commitment to building a safer and greener food system - Ms. Sanne Høj Andrén shared.

During his visit to Vietnam in mid-May 2024, Mr. Jacob Jensen, Danish Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, said: "In the process of implementing green transition and sustainable food production, Denmark has developed methods and has a strong and innovative approach to the entire value chain, helping to increase production productivity and improve product quality but at the same time minimizing water and energy consumption. We look forward to sharing. these experiences and inspire deeper cooperation with Vietnamese partners.”

At the same time, Minister Jacob Jensen agreed on the upcoming cooperation program, because this is a clear demonstration of effective cooperation between the two sides, when both countries not only have common needs and interests but, more importantly, share common goals and visions of a sustainable food system that can withstand all external impacts.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan and Danish Minister of Agriculture Jacob Jensen signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation, May 14, 2024.

Vietnam and Denmark have long-term and close bilateral cooperation in the field of food safety. Since 2017, the cooperation program between the two countries has focused on food safety and animal feed production. The program is also an important component of the Green Strategic Partnership agreement, launched by the two Prime Ministers in November 2023. In particular, Vietnam and Denmark committed to promoting green transition and green growth, supporting Vietnam to build a green economy and complete the commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Specifically, the Strategic Sector Cooperation on Food (SSC Food) program between Vietnam and Denmark is jointly implemented by the Danish Veterinary and Food Authority (DVFA) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Phase 1, the project focuses on improving basic conditions for the development of the animal feed industry through enhancing the capacity of state officials and improving the legal framework on the prudent use of veterinary drugs.

Phase 2, from April 2020 to April 2024, the cooperation program focuses on key areas such as improving the capacity of local officials in all steps of the food chain from farm to table, combating antibiotic resistance (AMR), controlling animal feed, traceability and recall of unsafe food.

In phase 3 from 2024 to 2026, Denmark will focus on the green transition process in agriculture, improving food safety and animal feed in Vietnam. At the same time, the country will support the development of regulations and initiatives to build facilities and strategies to reduce loss and waste of agricultural and food products.
